President June Wilkinson presented a cheque for $30,000 on behalf of Nelson Bay ‘Torchies’ and President Carol Brindley added another $8,000 from Lemon Tree Passage ‘Torchies’. These groups, all volunteers, work together with Port Stephens Legacy Group administration, legatees, Widows’ Clubs and support organisations to raise funds to help support nearly 300 members of the Legacy family. “Here in Port Stephens, Legacy has had a long-standing commitment to the families of former servicemen and women,” Doug Jacka told Bay News of The Area “In the Nelson Bay and Tilligerry Peninsula areas, we have nearly 300 people in our care, mainly elderly ladies who look to Legacy for varying levels of support, advice and social interaction,” Mr Jacka said. The organisation is seeing younger service families needing care including those involved in Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. The need for Legacy’s help is ongoing. Mr Jacka thanked supporter organisations who attended the event included Port Stephens Widows’ Club, Nelson Bay RSL Sub-Branch, Tilligerry RSL Sub-Branch, Port Stephens Veterans and Citizens Community Aged Care, Nelson Bay High School, Nelson Bay Bowling & Recreation Club and Soldiers Point Bowling Club. He also noted apologies from Newcastle Legacy and Regis – The Gardens who were unable to attend. The tireless efforts of the volunteer support groups and the generosity of the venues who give their function areas free of charge or at a generously discounted rate is vitally important to Port Stephens Legacy Group. The funds enable the Legatees to ensure those service families in the organisation’s care are looked after to the best possible standards.
