PORT Stephens is set to host the PCYC Nations of Origin, a multi-faceted sport, cultural, education and leadership program for the third time.

Nations of Origin is one of the largest Aboriginal youth events in NSW.

The event celebrates Reconciliation, Education, Cultural Identity and Sport.

Each team represents an Aboriginal Nation and wears the Nation’s totem.

Phillip Ross of the PCYC told News Of The Area, “The PCYC sees attendance at school as extremely important, we understand and value the impact of education for young people in laying the foundations for their future.”

“Teams representing the Worimi Nation will be represented across a range of sports.”

“The event is a celebration of culture,” he said.

The three sports that will be contested are Football 5s, Netball and Rugby League.

All Nations of Origin teams consist of Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal young people with a 70:30 ratio.

The tournament will see at least 1006 young people participate in teams supported by a further 100 young people.

PCYC also offers the participants opportunities to develop their skills and character through leadership, citizenship, sporting and wellbeing programs.

Janelle Gardner, Tourism and Events Coordinator at Port Stephens Council said, “The PCYC Nations of Origin will bring in over 1,000 visitors to Port Stephens between July 11-13.”

“Competitors travel from all over NSW and for some of the kids attending this event, it will be the first time they have ever been to the coast.”

“Along with the social benefits, Nations of Origin is expected to have an economic impact of more than $500,000 across the Port Stephens LGA,” she said.

Locals are encouraged to come along and watch the sporting events.
