Brooke Feltis from Boomerang Bags and the Myall River Action Group’s Gordon Grainger were both invited to address the members.

Brooke, along with a small but dedicated group of volunteers, is working hard within the community to stamp out the use of plastic bags in supermarkets.

They cut, stitch and sew shopping bags from recycled and donated fabric.

‘We’ve gone from just four people to about 20 regular volunteers since we began our group back in April,’’ Brooke said.
‘We’re not about making money, we sell our bags for just $2, we’re about raising awareness.”

As part of their campaign they’re encouraging residents and businesses to join in a plastic free hour between 10am and 11am this Saturday 23 September.

‘We’re asking all the community to say no to plastic, similar to the earth hour when everyone turns their lights off.”

Gordon Grainger spoke about his group’s recent success organising a clean up of the Myall River between the Singing Bridge and Hook’n Cook.

Four divers took to the water, with boats above dragging up dozens of old tyres, bottles and debris from the bottom.

The Lion Clubs joined MidCoast Council in supporting the initiative and say they’re only too happy to offer ongoing assistance for future clean-ups.

Lions Club President John Hughes also offered Boomerang Bags the club’s support.

The Boomerang Group will be at Myall Quay’s Shopping Centre this Saturday to promote their ‘no plastic’ initiative.

The Lions will provide a sausage sizzle and local MP Kate Washington will also be on hand lending her support.
