The YMCA has operated the facility, located in a Council-owned property on Sturgeon Street, since 2010. It informed members via email on Monday 27 June of its intention to close its doors.

Council is not considering managing the facility once the YMCA ceases operations.

“While Council is disappointed at the decision made by the YMCA in this case, we understand the reasons behind it,” Council’s Group Manager of Corporate Services Carmel Foster said.

“Council has supported the YMCA since the beginning. It provided significant funding for the initial fit out, below-market rent when compared to similar sites in Raymond Terrace, as well as ongoing capital works, repairs and maintenance. It also agreed to a further rent reduction in recent negotiations with the YMCA.

“In the end, the decision to cease operating is the YMCA’s to make. As owner of the building, Council is working to find a replacement tenant to ensure those who use the facility are provided with continuity of service.”
