The redevelopment of the Hunter residences has moved from the planning stage to the building stage, with construction of the first properties commencing.

Member of the Legislative Council, Taylor Martin joined the construction crew from the Home4Life consortium to turn the first sod at the property in Swansea, which will include homes for ten people currently living in the Hunter Residences.

“Today marks an important milestone in the delivery of this major NSW Government reform,” Mr Martin said.

“We are providing new, purpose-built accommodation for people previously living in the Kanangra, Stockton and Tomaree group homes.”

“The redevelopment will provide a higher quality of life for residents including more opportunities for inclusion and participation in their local communities.”

Minister for Disability Services, Ray Williams said the new properties are a vast improvement on the existing residences, and will provide people with disability more opportunities to increase their social wellbeing.

“The new units have been designed by expert architects to meet the individual needs of people with disability,” Mr Williams said.

“We know that it’s easier for people with disability living in home-like accommodation to maintain social connections to their local community.

“We’ve also heard from residents about where they want to live, with many choosing to move closer to their families.”

“I am thrilled to let residents know we are one step closer to handing over the keys to their new homes,” he said.

Charles Northcote, Director of Home4Life echoed the Minister’s sentiments saying, “It is an exciting day that sees the new homes becoming a reality.”

The first residents are expected to move into their new homes in mid-2019.
