IT was standing room only at a recent meeting to discuss a proposal for a new quarry in Bundabah.

150 locals from North Arm Cove, Pindimar and Bundabah gathered to voice their concerns about a development application for the quarry now lodged with MidCoast Council by Tattersall and Lander on behalf of developer Phillip Lee.

Resident Janine Reid proposed a motion calling upon Council to reject Development Application 269/2017 due to the damage it could do to both the surrounding natural environment and the quality of life in nearby villages.

The motion was seconded by CEO of the Aboriginal Land Council Len Roberts and passed unanimously.

Local MP Kate Washington lent her support to the cause.

“It’s clear that the development proposal is of great concern to many residents,” Ms Washington told News Of The Area.

“The main concerns were that the proposed quarry presents a significant risk to the environment whilst also posing a significant threat to the peaceful enjoyment of nearby properties.”

“Neither of these potential threats are adequately addressed in the development application.”

Ms Washington added, “Given the applicant is already currently embroiled in Land and Environment Court proceedings for alleged non-compliance with existing environmental protections, I urged the applicant’s representative to withdraw the development application and fix up the mess that has already been made before pursuing more approvals.”

The DA proposes the quarrying of 25,000 cubic metres of rock a year for an indefinite time.

The quarry would also be able to operate on a daily basis.

Another development project for the site remains with the Land and Environment Court until further hearings in late September.
