Myall Coast rising stars have shone brightly at this year’s Taree and District Eisteddfod, bringing home a huge haul of awards and trophies.

Dozens of Bulahdelah Central School students from Years 4 to 12 recently joined thousands of performers from throughout the region competing in the Speech and Drama Section of the Eisteddfod.

The talented students took to the stage at Manning Entertainment Centre demonstrating outstanding skills in public speaking, monologues, short plays, unscripted drama and duologues.

In addition to wins in many individual sections, the school also received four major awards.

Bailey Shultz was named best male performer in a group presentation and Tim Smith won the Manning Valley Businessman’s Association Award for an outstanding performance by a male competitor.

Tim said Drama is one of his favourite subjects at school and performing in the eisteddfod was an excellent learning experience.

“I went in five separate sections in the competition which all required different skills,” Tim said.

“It was a good opportunity to improve my dramatic techniques and confidence by performing on a professional stage.”

Senior students Madison Shannon and Kyle Shultz won the MidCoast Water Encouragement Awards.

Madison said she enjoyed the performances but was very surprised to find out she had won the award.

“I didn’t expect to win, but I’m very excited that others think that I am capable of achieving the high standard needed for this award,” Madison said.

“The experience has taught me to be confident in front of a large crowd and the importance of teamwork.”

Other standout performances came from the Year 10 and 12 Drama classes and Year 11 student Stevie-Lee Smith for her part in a humorous play about a politician on his bike.

Organising teacher Mrs Vanessa Shultz said she was very pleased with the teamwork and performances of the students.

“Our drama students are very talented and committed,” Mrs Shultz said.

“They showcased their innovation, creativity, humour and flexibility.”

Now in its 49th year, the Taree and District Eisteddfod is one of the largest in Australia with the whole event planned and run by volunteers.
