She is a Wirreanda Public School student, a keen quilter, a girl guide, and now among many other endeavours, a namer of cranes!

A few months back, Wirreanda Public School students were proud to liaise with Williamtown RAAF Base and CPB construction company to enter a competition to name the giant crane towering over the RAAF base development works at Williamtown,

Students were given the opportunity to paint, draw, colour and make a model of the crane, as well as name it.

There were so many wonderfully talented entrants, and the school was very proud of the combined efforts of its students.

Scarlett Lewis was the overall winner of the whole competition, after making a great deal of effort to choose the name.

Scarlett liaised with Vicki Griffiths from the local Worimi Land Council to choose the name ‘Birriwal’ for this giant crane.

Birriwal means big and strong in the traditional language of the Worimi people.

This week, Scarlett attended a special ceremony at the Williamtown RAAF base to participate in the official unveiling of the name on the crane.

The crane now proudly has ‘Birriwal’ on a sign on the side, and attendees of the ceremony watched as the cover was dropped to reveal the new name plate.

Birriwalis the largest crane to be on an active defence base.

Scarlett and her family were fortunate enough to be joined by Base Commander, Worimi Elders, CPB engineers and board members along with other notaries at the unveiling.

Scarlett told News Of The Area, “I was really excited to go to the RAAF base and felt really proud to have the name I chose to be the winning entry.”

“It was a nice privilege to meet the Worimi Elders, Uncle John, Aunty Lorraine and Uncle Neville.”
